Autumn Is Calling

I know I know, with the Summer heat still blasting your skin, it’s hard to imagine that shortly the temperatures will drop with the leaves & boom! Fall will be here. But it’s true & I can’t freaking WAIT. I’m already drooling over 2016 Fall items & color palettes & need to share them with you all…like NOW.

Thus, here are my favorite looks, items & colors from the coming season’s portfolio. Brace yourselves, it’s gonna get good.

Don’t Choke: one of the best, & slightly nostalgic pieces I’m loving this Fall is the ever-familiar choker. No, not the weird, wannabe barbed-wire ones [although I see those everywhere & basically hate them], but rather the metal, chic pieces that actually exist & are actually really cute. Take your usual layered necklace situation & majorly upgrade it with one simple addition. Or, for a bolder look, wear just the one, but make it chunky & loud. Not too sure you’re ready to go back to the early 90s on this one? Try a simple leather piece & tie it up. The best part about this accessory is there are tons of options & tons of price points, so the possibilities are pretty endless.

Velvety Goodness: I know it seems like we’re basically just throwing back to your middle school days this Fall, but in all honesty, it’s like all the weird items we hated then, came back & said, “We want vengeance.” & I mean…they kinda got it. Velvet is back & PISSED; ready to show the world she can & she will. My favorite pieces are light pastels, light weight, & neutral. The louder hues remind me of a weird scene in Eye Wide Shut or something [not cute]. The trick: fit is everything; drowning yourself in a velvet ensemble is not the goal & is not a good look on anyone. Ever.

Hood Rat: one of the best pieces this Fall is the hoodie–yes, I said it. The freaking hoodie is here. Hi comfort, nice to see you again. Styling this look is key; it takes layers & accessory additions to assure that you don’t just look lazy & hungover. Note: regardless of what you add, this look is still relatively casual. I don’t recommend hitting your next interview or business dinner in this fit, but for a quick bite or drink with girlfriends…#perfection. A few of my favorite styling tricks with this look [to up the ante]: a front tuck, layered, with heels, or under a blazer.

Moto Psycho: the moto look is here to stay, no matter how hard you try to remove it from the fashion repertoire. This season, however, it’s coming out everywhere; jackets, denim, handbags…everywhere you look, you will see slight nods to moto style & I can pretty much guarantee you’re gonna like it. My favorite pieces usually pertain to the lower half of the body, as well as layering pieces, but there are seriously cool looks I’ve found that will undoubtedly inspire my edgier babes.

Pierced Purses: this Fall is bound to produce some of the best handbags I’ve seen in probably the last decade. No joke. The absolute love of my life being the Septum bag [as I’ve grown to call it]. Pierced purses are basically any handbag that looks like it spent a few minutes at a piercing parlor. There are so many different styles, colors, metals, materials…but one thing is universal among them–they’re cute as eff.

Fall Flavors [no pics just a breakdown]: aside from amazing Fall items, comes amazing Fall colors, & this year finally has a few new hues in the mix. Pink meets yellow meets “pumpkin spice” and even makes friends with nudes & florals. Yes, florals, in Fall…WHAT. Just be sure to keep them mild & breezy, kinda like the weather, ya dig?

So whether these styles suite your fancy or you choose to pick your own favorites this Fall, make them yours. As I always preach, customization & fit are everything to identifying your own personal style. My blog is simply here to inspire, not to force. Pick pieces you love physically & visually, because everything else would just be a waste of your time & money.

& remember, Happy Hunting.

All or Nothing

Hi babes, long time no blog! It’s been a crazy few weeks, but here I am & soooooo ready to get some important fashion information your way.

The past few weeks the Summer heat has been a’kickin & I’ve been noticing the outfit creativity of fellow shoppers, clients, friends, passer-bys…basically everyone. I love watching what people put together & how & why, particularly when it’s hot as hell out & throwing 100 layers on is simply not an option. [Let us take a moment to remember what cold weather feels like for just a second…..*sigh*] BUT, I’ve noticed something criminal that I simply cannot watch anymore. Thus, I’m hoping today’s post will help even just one single woman understand the importance of these tips & commit to them religiously.

I call today’s lesson ‘The Entire Package’.

No not some sexy man on the street that you drool over or your latest Packed Party order [if you don’t already know, just freaking click the link, because Jordan is amazing]. The entire package is the reason we buy nice things; clothes, jewelry, shoes, handbags, hair products, nail polishes…whatever it is, we purchase these products to attain just the right look that suits us. However, what I have been finding is that we spend so much time on trying to attain that specific look, that we forget the little things like our hair, our makeup, or our jewelry. You know, like the most important part of an entire outfit. & frankly, I just can’t watch it happen anymore. [Enter: bitch voice.]

So today, I’ve broken down my top five Summer outfits, from head to toe, to help my clients & friends & followers better understand how to seal the deal & work an entire ensemble, not just an item or two. Because otherwise, why the hell are you even putting forth any effort? #sorrynotsorry

Let’s Go…

tourist shic

Look #1: feel like vacationing through the South of France this Summer? Or maybe you just want to try out a new look; this ensemble by Sincerely Jules is spot on. Perfectly unkempt locks [probably yesterday’s wash because she’s so busy sight-seeing], a bright pop of color to enhance her tan, white shorts to accent her amazing stems & a fun, printed shoe to add a point of interest to the fit. Throw on a cross-body bag & you’re ready to tour the entire city with ease. Minimal jewelry for a look like this; the point is to look understated. She’s appropriate for her environment & entirely put together.
big details simple hair

Look #2: have a sexy sunset date? Maybe just grabbing drinks with girlfriends? This look is perfect. Statement jewelry & sunnies to show that you plan to get a little fancy & a lot wild, a fitted, high-neck tank to dress it up, an on-trend pair of printed shorts that are appropriate from day to night, & an amazing oversized handbag. Topped off with understated, pulled back, straight locks, because big curls would be serious overkill on this one, & a pop of bright lip stain; you’ve got the entire room asking for your digits.
monochromatic pop

Look #3: wanna go monochromatic? All good. But do it right; find two to three colors max to successfully achieve this look. Babe above elevates the entire fit with her perfectly loose curls, but keeps it minimal with her makeup. A bright pink cheek, statement jewelry at her wrist, black & white color wheel, amazing double buckle sandals, & a printed bag to throw everything off. This look says I’m rocker chic, but spend a lot of my time at the flower mart. & what guy doesn’t love that?
romper simplicity

Look #4: hitting the Hampton’s this weekend? How about a trailer park pool party? Regardless, if you plan on spending the day in the sun, ditch your accessories & commit to being au naturel. There’s nothing worse than huge statement jewelry tan-lines, plus it’s just extra crap to take off before lotioning up. This black & white striped romper is one of my favorites this Summer; a light pink mani, tan, smooth skin, hair pulled back into a low bun, a hit of bronzer on your cheek bones & an amazing pair of sunnies…you’re good to go & the pool boy won’t keep his hands eyes off of you.
simple chicLook #5: boho babes can miss queue’s too; even the simplest of outfits need attention & the one above is executed brilliantly. With soft, wavy locks, pink lips, a crochet off-shoulder pullover [with a sexy pop of skin showing], a long beaded necklace, full length skirt with a sneak peek of leg, some great gold accents to enhance the vibrant navy skirt, an appropriate pair of dressy sandals [Old Navy $2 flip flops are not footwear, ladies] & a large nude clutch because simplicity is everything…this look is the perfect blend of ready for a cocktail, but up for a walk on the beach.

These simple tweaks in the way you approach an outfit can be monumental. Shifting the focus towards the fine details & making sure you complete the entire look not only makes you more put together, but will make you feel like the most fashion forward one in the room. & who doesn’t love that?

Happy Summer, babes. Xx.

Basic Bunnies

Whether you’re meeting your significant other’s family for the first time, or simply spending time with your least favorite relatives, Easter outfits can be a tricky thing. Department store racks are currently spilling over with floral ensembles, so I’ve decided to not let you go the easy route; just say no to floral this holiday #dontbebasic. Instead, I’ve put together my six favorite Easter 2015 looks, so you too can get inspired & find your inner creative pastel bunny, in hopes to make this Sunday’s outfit one you’ll actually want to look back on.

Let’s go.

lavender maxi easter

Ditch the typical floral maxi, find yourself a beautiful lavender, soft pink, even powder blue one instead. Keeping with the pastel theme, this dress will make you feel like a princess in a room full of frogs [don’t worry, they all have the potential to be princes].

polka dot easter

Keep it fresh with an unexpected print like this oversized polka dot tunic; it adds texture & dimension to a once simple design. Find one in a gorgeous pastel? Well, you’ve won the freaking lottery.

pink lace easter

The one cliché fabric that I’ll always let slide is lace. This always beautiful, always chic, effortless garment stands alone without fuss. Julia Engel rocked this one above with her amazing [$1,000] Valentino pointed-toe slingbacks, but a playful gladiator sandal or wedge would team just as well.

white on white easter

Not feeling a dress this Easter Sunday? Try a monochromatic look instead. Julie Sarinana [my favorite style blogger on the planet] is the white on white queen. Pair neutral colors together [white, tan, grey, charcoal, black, taupe] & don’t look back. Just be sure you’re ultra stain-conscious throughout the day.

tie dye dress easter

As much as I love a stand-alone maxi, I’m more interested in unique pieces like this tie-dyed beauty. A stylish way to ring in the Spring season without looking like you just stepped out of High Times Magazine. Top it off with a sexy heel & you’ll feel like JLo on the red carpet circa 2000.

white shorts easter

& finally, one of my favorites; shorts. This look is perfect for a chilly morning brunch turned afternoon hellish sun. Team a waffle knit sweater with a soft pair of shorts & you’ll be the most prepared fashionista in the room.

Lastly, make me one single promise this Easter Sunday & say it out loud to yourself: “I will not ruin my adorable Easter outfit that Lyric helped me style with an awful pair of old flip flops. I will take the time to pair the appropriate footwear to finalize my outfit & not break Lyric’s heart.”

Nothing makes me more devastated in my clients than when I catch them being lazy with their footwear decisions. Always take the time to top off your entire fit.

& with that, I wish you well in all of your outfit decisions. & remember, regardless of anything, this is a day to spend time together, to love on one another & to feel good about yourself.

Happy Styling.

Xx.

Similarly Opposite

As I scoured department stores the past few weeks [not forgetting to add congratulations to us all for surviving yet another holiday shopping season without a warrant for our arrest] for that “perfect gift” [whatever that even means] for my loved ones, I naturally found myself doing what I do best: fashion stalking. No, I don’t get weird or harm anyone. I just look. A lot. I silently survey fellow shoppers, I view mannequins, I look at wall decor, & colors & patterns & sidewalks, & I touch everything; clothes, hardware, curtains, blankets, jewelry…I’m basically a freak for texture. I watch for patterns, trends, habits, pretty much anything that tends to lead the pack in one general direction or another. & then…I break it. Mentally, of course. I imagine a world turned upside-down, where these trends no longer drive a major group & I conjure up ways in which I can educate my clients on how to do it differently & for their own self.

After slamming two [possibly three] Cinnamon Hazelnut Latte’s from Peets & heading home, I reviewed my findings. & I recognized a major common thread among many of the men & women I’d seen during my research: over-planning. Outfits that reeked of over-intention & matchy-ness. & I started to wonder, what is it that makes for a successful outfit?

My answer: the sweet spot. The similarly opposite place in your world that holds all things in balance.

The sweet spot is the tiny nook in your fashionista[o] world where color, individuality, comfort, pattern, intention, practicality, & flair all come together to make a beautiful outfit baby. & it exists. Without much energy exerted on your behalf. Yes, really. [That’s why I’m here].

Where do we start? The color wheel.

Screen Shot 2015-01-05 at 10.30.50 AM

To understand fashion [or basically life itself] one must first know & understand the color wheel & what it all really means. Most importantly: color harmony [the theory of which colors are analogous with others]. Layman’s terms: find the color you’re feeling that day on the wheel above & match it with the three colors next to it. Literally. That’s color harmony. The second most important concept of the color wheel: complementary colors. Take the color you want to focus on//rock the hell out of that day & pair it with the three to four colors across from it on the color wheel. This ain’t rocket science people.

& now you’re a color expert.

But visuals make everything better…

Need I say more?

Sometimes those two pieces you never imagined working side by side are dying for you to finally bring them together. & you should. For fashion’s sake & for your own creative identity.

& the next time you find yourself reaching for that black on black ensemble that you’ve been working all Winter long, try some color on for size. After all, creativity drives greatness.

Happy 2015 babes. Xx.
