Generation ME

If you have access to internet, be it dial-up or 5G (is that the thing people use now?), then you’ve likely heard about the feud between Gen Z and Millenials (mostly millennial moms, lets be real) regarding side parts and skinny jeans. And while this ridiculous battle took a heavy turn this week, leading to deep-rooted mom problems and conversations, I’m here to keep it light and dissect the happenings on this topic and my approach to both sides–Lyric style.

Whether you have any idea what I’m talking about or not need not matter, because I’m really just here to talk about denim, and if you know anything about me you know this is a topic I could go on about for hours. Truly. Discussing side parts and middle parts isn’t exactly my dream convo, but hair completes the outfit so let’s stay focused on the picture as a whole.

Truth be told, I don’t really care which side you stand on, or whether you vibe with your kids style, your grandmas style, or sit happily in the middle with a button-up cardigan and skin tight leather pants…I’m here to break down how to wear, where to wear, and why to wear these particular items and on what body types, ages, etc. Let’s just get to the juice, shall we.

THE WIDE VIBE: There is always a time and place for switching up your denim look; be it a country concert, a mannequin at Urban Outfitters, or just a trip to the early 2000’s (J/K Gen Zer’s, that’s just my mom side showing). Creative denim cuts have a strong place in my heart, when managed properly. READ THAT AGAIN. If you search current retailers content you’ll find droves of wide leg, extra wide leg, mom jeans, dad jeans, straight leg jeans, paperbag jeans…the list goes on (many of which bring me back to the days of JNCO jeans *shiver*), but nonetheless–skinny jeans pretty much cease to exist for retailers with target markets under 30 years of age. And while I’m 100% here for anyone marching to the beat of their own styling drum, I can’t help but notice how…unkempt? it all looks. It’s like a giant Burning Man orgy all smooshed into an outfit; colors, patches, zippers, no symmetry, no couth. My point is this: wide, slouch, boot, mom, dad, high waist, low waist, no waist, and the like, do best when paired with feminine details that showcase your favorite attributes of your body. If you don’t want denim suffocating your bottom half, I appreciate it, but you’ve got to add subtle details to balance out the look and prevent from creating a boxy, unfinished, Kanye West runway nightmare. Hint: don’t be afraid of a little color, a low cut top, a sky-high heel…make it fun and creative, but with a touch of sex. What does that actually look like, you ask? Here we go…

SKINNY’S FOREVER: And if you are a ride or die, skinny jeans to the end kinda person then fear not. There’s a few ways to freshen up your old-faithful look without completely stepping outside of comfort zones. The key to success when rocking true skinny jeans (a leg shaping, ankle gripping, drop a size or two denim cut) is finding balance in the look. With such a loud design the upper half should be minimal–no not less fun, but rather neutral, quieter options to maintain uniformity. Throw on a leather jacket to add interest without volume, a neutral but tall heel/boot, even an oversized tee and some layered necklaces can break up the bore of this long-standing denim look. The goal is to be updated but classic, think Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

As mentioned, this debate didn’t end with skinny jeans vs wide leg, no no, it continued with side parts and middles part and something to do with JTT…but we’ll save that blog post for another day. And while I’m really not here to pretend I’m a beautician, I AMMMM here to provide resources, information, and LOTS of opinions about how I can help amazing, creative, beautiful people dial in their great sense of style with tools they already have.

MIDDLE OF THE ROAD: FIIIIIINE Generation Z, I’ll give you this one. There really is something about a middle part that just feels classic and effortless. Like the days before we accosted our heads with heat and dyes and sprays, or that one time you got out of the ocean and your hair created the most perfect beach waves you’d ever seen and it’s never happened again since that day. Nobody else, just me? Regardless, it’s the classic of all classics and can be the perfectly uncomplicated topper to an outfit. Ideal for round faces, allowing the hair to flow across both sides of the face helping elongate it’s shape.

SIDEWAYS, ALWAYS: I don’t care what anyone says, a side part makes you feel instantly glam. Try it. Go on. Swoosh your hair over to one side and peak in a mirror–SEE. It’s a whole vibe. It elevates your entire upper half and can take a look from day to night as quickly as a brush of a comb and spritz of a product. What item in your closet can do that? Keep in mind the side part is ideal for diamond and square shaped faces, as it helps highlight the angles of the face.

Look, while I’m not sitting here saying one is better than the other on this topic, because truth be told I switch my part up probably once a week, no joke, and my denim collection is either completely impressive or completely gluttonous, I’m really not sure, I am here to say that you have every right to prefer one over the other and feel that one genuinely represents your personal style better than the other. Not to mention, it helps to note that refreshing your part is actually really good for your hair.

So I guess what I’m saying is this: lets agree to disagree on this whole Gen Z vs Millenial battle that really does nothing for anyone besides create animosity. Personal style has always and will always be about what makes you feel like your best self. So get the new cut of jeans or take the risk and flip that hair honey, because tomorrow is a new day and you have to live it however the hell makes you happiest.

Maternity, Where?

Sooooooooooo, I’ve got news! I’m gonna be a mom. I’ll let that sink in for a few seconds…

Phew! Ok. I feel closer with everyone already. But seriously, come November 2019, this little lady [and her husband] are going to have a peanut of their own. And while I’m insanely excited and elated and honored that the universe allowed me [and my family] this gift, I’m also human and I’m having FEEEEEELLLLIIIIINNNGGGGGSSSS. Particularly involving my wardrobe and growing…uh, body.

I’m nineteen weeks as of yesterday, so while I can still see my feet, and find my belly pretty “cute”, I’m becoming increasingly disagreeable inside my own skin. To be honest, this feeling is not entirely foreign to me, but I like to believe I’ve got a pretty good working relationship with myself and my self-image. That is until today.

Today, I decided to try maternity wear…DUN DUN DUN. I know. All the new/millennial moms out there are shaking their heads and screaming “WHY?!” at their screens, because our generation has decided we’re gonna try to shove ourselves into regular womenswear until the day we pop. Right? Totes get it. This was is my plan, too, hence why today was well, in a word: brutal.

After consuming a caffeinated beverage [yes, coffee and I are still friends; I don’t want to hear ANYTHING from anyone about pregnancy and caffeine intake. Just click here and move on], and convincing myself I was ready to walk into Destination Maternity, which I have successfully avoided for again, nineteen weeks, I got in my car and off I went.

Now, before I really get into it, I want to preface this post with the following: I have always and will always make this page a space for honesty and truth telling. If you aren’t about that life, totally good by me, but kindly exit. While I don’t find any joy in hating on companies or brands, I do find it important that we look out for one another and keep it real when we believe in things. And my findings today exposed a truth about the maternity-wear industry and just how financially crooked and unevolved it is. Let alone what little information pregnant women have access to in terms of styling their growing bodies during this time. Thus, today is about me sharing my experience; it is truly not meant to harm feelings about brands you may love or enjoy. Moving along…

I walked in and found the store quite pleasant; I was greeted, it was organized, and the music was tasteful, but definitely mom-friendly. I cruised over to the wall ‘o’ denim and began my search. [Oh did I mention, I was strictly in the market for denim today? Yes. All denim, all day.] The selections in their “affordable” area were slim to say the least, but I grabbed a few pairs and tried my luck.Screen Shot 2019-06-27 at 7.10.11 PM

On went these Indigo Blue Secret Fit Belly Skinny Leg Maternity Ankle Jeans first, thinking the light wash would be fun for summer, and while I definitely didn’t love the color, I figured I’d try it. OOF. Mistake. I knew that the horrific belly band they put on maternity denim wouldn’t be for me, but jesus christ it is NOT FOR MEEEEE. Who wants to feel like they’re wearing an extra layer of nude/tan skin on top of the intensely tight/weird skin you’re already living in? Side panels it is. I quickly moved along.

Screen Shot 2019-06-27 at 7.11.37 PM

Next up, these Indigo Blue Side Panel Skinny Leg Destructed Hen Maternity Crop Jeans. Better with the side panels I’ll admit, but made me feel like I was in 6th grade again, trying on jeans from Mervyn’s that were a cross between paper mache and denim. Not to mention this wash? WHAT ARE YOU?! PASS.

Now, knowing what we know about denim, we know that pockets are EVERYTHING, even with a growing bump. Right?! Right. Ok class dismissed.

Judging by how this was going, it was time to bite the bullet and look at the designer brands. I mean, I deserve nice jeans right? I’m PREGNANT for gods sake, I deserve to feel great. I work hard! I’m growing a HUMAN inside of me! I deserve $200 jeans. **These were all the things I said to myself while rationalizing $200+ jeans that I only plan to wear for the next five months of my life.**

So Paige, here we come. I wear Paige jeans off and on; the pockets always fit great and they have some of the best washes in the denim game, but I wouldn’t say they’re a favorite of mine. Fit is usually off and the price never really makes sense to me for what you get.

Screen Shot 2019-06-27 at 7.12.21 PM

That being said, here they were, the Paige Side Panel Verdugo Ankle Maternity Jeans. Classic. Straight leg, light distressing, with a little cut to make them feel almost skinny. I still felt like a frump, but less of one, convincing myself that I’m just not going to feel good about myself for quite some time now, so just hunker down and get on board. Next step was to find my size, rationalize my purchase, and off we shall…..nope. None in my size. None even close to my size. None even in the same ballpark as a size that would prevent me from spiraling about said size. Meltdown begins.

Now while I slowly placed these egregiously priced pair of denim back on their rack, I felt relief. Relief that I hadn’t just made such a ridiculous purchase over jeans that were, in two words: very okay. Relief that I hadn’t let the vortex of Destination Maternity suck me in and throw my money at it. And then I really began to think about how I would’ve only worn these pants for five months, when I’ve preached on my blog for years to not spend money on shit you don’t plan to really get wear and tear out of. I’ve told every client I have that money is not the determinant of good style, brands mean nothing. Yet, here I was, at a freaking MATERNITY STORE, allowing myself to play the game. I was mad. I WAS PISSED. And I left.

In my moment of rage, I decided that Nordstrom would be a good idea. Again, millennial hopeful, trying to find some instant gratification to make up for this crap experience.

I stumble in the doors, basically waving my money around in hopes of bringing good shopping juju to the sitch, and walk straight up to the Good American section of the store. Because Khloe Kardashian will understand by pain today, right? Right. I was greeted with a, “Sorry ma’am [Yes, I got ma’am-ed], we don’t have a maternity line in our store. It’s all online.” ONLINE. Yes, please let me mentally try clothes on, because I’ve never felt more familiar with myself or my size than as of late, and the inter web is clearly the ideal place for me to find clothing right now. Are you kidding? Is this seriously the slim pickins’ pregnant women have? And really, should I be shocked? I mean it’s a ten month stint of a woman’s life. How can fashion markets survive on such short term buyers and purchases? Oh right! By charging $200 for a pair. Cleared that up earlier ^^

I nodded and walked away, feeling completely defeated at this point. And lets be real: not-pregnant Dena probably wouldn’t have been so moved by such an afternoon, but the experience was not only eye opening to a corner of the fashion world I hadn’t really focused on or even explored for that matter, but emotionally challenging because I feel like a weird blob as it is right now, the last thing I need is to be shlepping all over town to find jeans that I quite frankly, don’t even really want in the first place. But here I was.

So I convinced myself that jeans were off the table. Let’s find a top instead and regain whatever shred of confidence you had prior to your shopping choices today. To Topshop I went. My dearest, kindest friend, who always seems to get my fashion journey as I explore it year in and year out. They have pieces that are young and fun, but also the classics; pieces that never break the budget, but allow you to feel like you’d be proud telling someone where you got it when they inevitably compliment your choice ;] And no, I don’t get paid to say any of this. #notad #wishitwasthough #acceptingtopshopdonations

I walked through their section and within five minutes had 20 items in my hands, denim included. I found my way to the fitting room and took a deep breath. Here goes.

Screen Shot 2019-06-27 at 7.48.41 PM.png

First pair, the Mid Blue Ripped Jamie Jeans. I probably have 30 pairs of Topshop jeans, no joke, and the Jamie’s always work for my body type. Today was no different. SUCCESS. They fit! Just enough give in the waist [I sized up one size], hugged my hips and thighs to make me feel confident and feminine, and the wash was perfect. The pockets always endorse my assssssssets and help boost my confidence when walking away in a crowded room, if ya know what I mean? I was feelin myself now, people.

Screen Shot 2019-06-27 at 8.00.45 PM

Next were the Mid Blue Jamie Jeans [not ripped or distressed] and honey, I felt goooooood. I liked the option of having a casual pair that were distressed, but a “dressier” pair without. Again: pockets on point, a tiny bit lighter wash which I was into for summer, and they were the “ankle grazers” which accent heels, flats–pretty much any style of summer shoe. I was so elated by the two winners that I ditched all the other items in the room and headed to the register to pay up.

As this super sweet woman rang me up, she exclaimed, “This pair is only $35!” I was shooketh. Am I gonna get out of here spending HALF of what I would’ve spent on one pair that I wasn’t really into to begin with?!? AND I feel good about myself??

This was intentional shopping at it’s finest; this is the feeling I try to implore my clients to have when they shop. The ability to find a, yes, material item, but one that removes the pain and discomfort we have with our self image. A tangible piece that made an awkward mom-to-be, struggling through the racks of a weird, expensive place, feel confident again and BEAUTIFUL. An item and an experience that left me in tears in my car because A. hormones, but B. because while this is all a new chapter for me [and for my readers], I’m excited to keep pushing through it and see how it grows me, and grows my brand. And I truly hope you all continue to cruise along on this journey with me. While I can’t promise it won’t be bumpy and maybe a little too TMI at times, it will, as always, be real AF.

My experience today was personal, vulnerable, and one that maybe only I related to, but I felt it was important to share. And while Topshop may not be the brand for you, I do feel like it may be one of the best kept secrets in the maternity wear game thus far. Don’t worry, I’ll keep updating you all with any other gems I find out there, because the search is FREAKIN ONNNNNN NOW!

How has fashion changed you recently? Are you a mama, or mommy-to-be, what were some fashion struggles you had while pregnant? What was an experience that grew you, in a fitting room, in a store, getting ready for a night out? Share you stories with me in the comments below.

Autumn Is Calling

I know I know, with the Summer heat still blasting your skin, it’s hard to imagine that shortly the temperatures will drop with the leaves & boom! Fall will be here. But it’s true & I can’t freaking WAIT. I’m already drooling over 2016 Fall items & color palettes & need to share them with you all…like NOW.

Thus, here are my favorite looks, items & colors from the coming season’s portfolio. Brace yourselves, it’s gonna get good.

Don’t Choke: one of the best, & slightly nostalgic pieces I’m loving this Fall is the ever-familiar choker. No, not the weird, wannabe barbed-wire ones [although I see those everywhere & basically hate them], but rather the metal, chic pieces that actually exist & are actually really cute. Take your usual layered necklace situation & majorly upgrade it with one simple addition. Or, for a bolder look, wear just the one, but make it chunky & loud. Not too sure you’re ready to go back to the early 90s on this one? Try a simple leather piece & tie it up. The best part about this accessory is there are tons of options & tons of price points, so the possibilities are pretty endless.

Velvety Goodness: I know it seems like we’re basically just throwing back to your middle school days this Fall, but in all honesty, it’s like all the weird items we hated then, came back & said, “We want vengeance.” & I mean…they kinda got it. Velvet is back & PISSED; ready to show the world she can & she will. My favorite pieces are light pastels, light weight, & neutral. The louder hues remind me of a weird scene in Eye Wide Shut or something [not cute]. The trick: fit is everything; drowning yourself in a velvet ensemble is not the goal & is not a good look on anyone. Ever.

Hood Rat: one of the best pieces this Fall is the hoodie–yes, I said it. The freaking hoodie is here. Hi comfort, nice to see you again. Styling this look is key; it takes layers & accessory additions to assure that you don’t just look lazy & hungover. Note: regardless of what you add, this look is still relatively casual. I don’t recommend hitting your next interview or business dinner in this fit, but for a quick bite or drink with girlfriends…#perfection. A few of my favorite styling tricks with this look [to up the ante]: a front tuck, layered, with heels, or under a blazer.

Moto Psycho: the moto look is here to stay, no matter how hard you try to remove it from the fashion repertoire. This season, however, it’s coming out everywhere; jackets, denim, handbags…everywhere you look, you will see slight nods to moto style & I can pretty much guarantee you’re gonna like it. My favorite pieces usually pertain to the lower half of the body, as well as layering pieces, but there are seriously cool looks I’ve found that will undoubtedly inspire my edgier babes.

Pierced Purses: this Fall is bound to produce some of the best handbags I’ve seen in probably the last decade. No joke. The absolute love of my life being the Septum bag [as I’ve grown to call it]. Pierced purses are basically any handbag that looks like it spent a few minutes at a piercing parlor. There are so many different styles, colors, metals, materials…but one thing is universal among them–they’re cute as eff.

Fall Flavors [no pics just a breakdown]: aside from amazing Fall items, comes amazing Fall colors, & this year finally has a few new hues in the mix. Pink meets yellow meets “pumpkin spice” and even makes friends with nudes & florals. Yes, florals, in Fall…WHAT. Just be sure to keep them mild & breezy, kinda like the weather, ya dig?

So whether these styles suite your fancy or you choose to pick your own favorites this Fall, make them yours. As I always preach, customization & fit are everything to identifying your own personal style. My blog is simply here to inspire, not to force. Pick pieces you love physically & visually, because everything else would just be a waste of your time & money.

& remember, Happy Hunting.

Frump-Free Winter

So in case you haven’t stepped outside in a few days, it’s effing freezing Winter is upon us. And I’ve had about 100 women contact me regarding Winter-wear & how to do it right; sans all the bulk & masculinity. Having just taken a trip to Tahoe & survived 9 degree temperatures in relatively cute outfits, I feel as though I’m qualified to fully take this discussion on head first. Not to mention my obsession with being warm & hating a funky outfit…but who needs particulars ;]

Below are my top Winter looks that remain feminine, sexy, & warm without all the fuss. I’ll be breaking down my favorite layering tips & tricks, fabric preferences to keep it cute, & best ways to put it all together. All in hopes to help you make the perfect cold-weather fit for your body type & lifestyle. Let’s get straight to it…

Processed with VSCOcam with a5 preset

Few things are more annoying than a bulky, heavy knit sweater, even when the weather permits. Opt for a lighter weight one this season & layer it with a soft, high-low piece underneath [complimenting colors, please]. This fit allows mobility all while keeping you plenty warm. Key to this look: size up on the layering pieces. Top it off with a great pair of leather leggings & you’re rocker-chic heaven.

boyfriend winter

Love the look of boyfriend denim, but don’t know how to incorporate it into your Winter wardrobe? No prob Bob. To add femininity, throw on a great heel [can be a bootie or sandal] & roll the cuffs to give dimension & shape. One of my favorite Winter pieces this year is a side-slit sweater; it gives a little peak of your torso, while still keeping your warm. Add that under a fitted leather jacket & you’ve got the best city-chic fit this side of the Bronx.

cute hat

Tired of the over-worn beanie look? Us too. Switch out that knit top & pop on a hat instead. It keeps you equally as warm, without the “I just got off the slopes, bro” look. The perfect boho fit: a gorgeous, asymmetrical knit sweater [the brighter the better] & a complimentary pair of fitted denim. Remember, oversized sweater=tighter denim, oversized denim=tighter top. You always want to make sure you’re still giving your body shape, especially when layering. Finish the look with a comfy pair of heeled booties [again, think soft, feminine pieces] & you’ll be the cutest snow bunny that ever was.

long coat

Want to remain chic, business-ready, but warm? Totally do-able. Invest in a great camel//soft pink coat this season [preferably wool]. This will be your go-to piece for years. The neutrality of the color will allow for major versatility; denim, white, black, grey…the colors are nearly endless. As for a complete look: pop on a favorite heel, work some casual, comfy denim or pants in, & finish it off with a fine-knit turtleneck or funnel collar. This fit will see you through an entire work day & into a great cocktail night with comfort & ease.

cute layers

Cute layering seems impossible, no? Wrong. It’s possible; it exists. The key: finding light-weight pieces that compliment one another without adding too much bulk. The best purchase a woman can make for Winter weather is a chambray button-up, as it’s soft, warm, & works effortlessly with nearly any fabric. Top it with a soft, waffle knit sweater [preferably turtleneck or crewneck] & an awesome pair of fitted leather leggings, & you’ve got a classic, comfortable look that keeps the heat in while bar-hopping in the cold Winter air all night.

pretty pink

Afraid to throw some color in during Winter? Don’t be. My favorite way to break up those sad winter neutrals is to hit em with the unexpected. Find a hot pink, mustard yellow, or cobalt blue fold-over turtleneck sweater this season, team it with a great pair of fitted denim [dare I recommend skinnies?!] & top it all off with a super tall pair of pumps. This look is casual but fierce bottled up in one & it will not go unnoticed.white denim

What’s more Wintery than white? Break all the rules this season & pair the best neutral ever created with every sweater you own. Seriously. White denim works with basically everything, particularly if they’re fitted//skinny. White with white, white with tan, white with black, white with blue, white with yellow…am I making myself clear here? However, be sure to add a point of interest; be it a loud shoe, handbag, etc., to add a little madness to the perfection. Your look will be unexpected & so ahead of the game. #takeawalkonthewildside

Whether you’re simply dressing for a day of shopping or heading to a major event, try something new this Winter season. Push the boundaries, make yourself a little uncomfortable in a new style or piece & growwwwww. Your wardrobe needs you, ya know. And so does your creative side.

Happy Styling, mega babes.

Step Into Fall

Sooooo, if I haven’t made my love for fall fashion clear enough yet, today is the day. I’m taking on fall footwear–which is where love turns to pure obsession. You see, there’s this small corner of the fashion world where all magical things come true; where leather meets gold meets sequins meets basically anything you could possibly imagine if you look hard enough. Some call it a shoe department. I call it my happy place.

I know what you’re thinking–how original, a woman that loves shoes. But truth be told, I find nothing more crucial in an outfit than the shoe selection. You can have on a $25,000 outfit, but if you put on the wrong footwear I want nothing to do with you it. Footwear is the binding element in a person’s wardrobe, so stop scrimping on the good stuff & start making better decisions. The time is now.

Thus, today I’ve compiled a quick list [with prices & click-through links] of my top ten favorite fall footwear fashions. These are the perfect pieces to add to your closet this season to help finish off those nearly perfect fits with ease. lace up flats

Lace Up Ballet Flats: the perfect day-to-night addition. These flats are chic yet practical for a busy day at the office to a night out with friends. Team them with dresses, denim, pants…they’re limitless. Tip: rock a light mist of bronzer on your feet to make them really pop.

My favorites: here, here & here.

loafers

Loafers: legitimately my biggest weakness this Fall; loafers are the perfect shoe. Truly. They’re feminine & sexy, but structured enough that you can take your Monday meetings by storm, but also have a hot makeout session with your Match.com date later. Tip: always go pointed toe.

My favorites: here & here.

silver oxfords

Oxfords: this season the oxford is on fire. This is the one & only shoe I will allow a client to choose in a metallic hue. Why? Because they’re amazing & your wardrobe will reach new heights with such an interesting choice. Tip: still stay minimal; silver, rose gold, gold & white only.

My favorites: here & here.

dorsay flats

D’Orsay Flats: the perfect outfit companion, d’Orsay flats go with literally everything; denim, pants, skirts, shorts…you name it. & the cut will make you feel sexier than ever. But selecting the right fit & color is the key to nailing this footwear find. For Fall, stick to cranberry, candy apple red, black, grey, taupe, nude, & blush hues. Tip: work them in before wearing them out–nobody likes bloody heels.

My favorites: here & here.

cutout

Cut-Out Booties: take your ankle boot addiction to the next level [what, you don’t have one?] with this season’s style shift. These geometric statements are the best way to draw attention to your stems & feet, without compromising comfort. Tip: watch your leg-to-ankle-ratio; ankle booties can cut you off, so make sure they’re highlighting your thinnest part & not taking away from it.

My favorites: herehere & here.

platform sneakers

Platform Sneakers: I know, you can’t even believe I’m going here right now, but I am. There are some serious competitors out there this season that are subtle, but loud enough to add some pizzaz to your wardrobe. & if executed properly, I say GO FOR IT. Plus, who doesn’t love a middle school throwback? Tip: this look is strictly daytime//casual//fun. Don’t try to turn it into evening wear.

My favorites: here & here.

pumps

The Pump: even with wild fall weather, a sturdy, simple pair of leather pumps is all the doctor ordered. They’re timeless, practical & always make sense on an otherwise busy day//week//life. I usually opt for the most extended pointed toe I can find to elongate my legs. Life tip: have at least one pair of nude & one pair of black pumps on hand, at all times.

My favorites: here & here.

ankle boots

The Ankle Bootie: not to be confused with booty, the ankle bootie is a fall wardrobe staple & has been around since what seems like the dawn of time. However, it’s time to switch it up a bit & not duplicate those black or tan Sam Edelman Petty Boots that we’ve all been sporting for like five years now [no offense Sam, I have like 35 pairs of them, xx]. This fall, throw a leopard print or fringe pair on or purchase the blush pink pair; spice it up somehow to differentiate you from the pack. It’s one thing to love a cut & style of shoe && want to wear the shit out of it for years to come [that’s also a great investment decision], however, keep it fresh & current when given the chance.

My favorites: here & here.

block heel

Heeled Sandals: seems counterintuitive right? But the right strappy sandal [preferable with a block heel] can be the perfect staple to defy the elements of fall. With enough support & leather, just a pop of skin can handle the cooler temperatures without hypothermia or discomfort. But be selective, because rocking a sandal in October means you’ve officially committed to being a fashionista. Now own it.

My favorites: here, here & here.

hunter

The Rain Boot: although I’m truly not the biggest advocate of this trend, I know it exists & it’s important to touch on. The Hunter Rain Boot syndrome–we all have it ladies, so let’s just own it now. But that doesn’t mean we have to have 400 pairs of them. The rain boot is the perfect little cut of PVC piping that allows us to frolic in rainy puddles whenever we please, but it deserves to be styled properly, as well. Team yours with a great pair of denim or even some cute leggings & throw some jewelry in the mix. Just promise me you won’t go to dinner in this fit unless you live in Oregon or somewhere equally as wet. Rain boots are for rain, babes. Not sprinkles. Rain.

My favorites: here & here.

Fall weather doesn’t mean you have to compromise your cute outfit selections, it just means you have to get a little more creative & think outside of the box. The most essential part of styling an outfit is comfort–if you aren’t feeling your best, you probably aren’t looking your best. Always opt for choices that you believe in & feel great in.

It’s time to start digging your heels into the fall season, ladies. Ah! See what I did there?

Happy Shopping.

Xx.

White Out

Does anyone else have a full fledged meltdown when white denim starts positioning itself on the shelves of your favorite retailers? As it is, I have a legitimate issue with denim; I need every wash, ever created. #certifiable. But white denim is my kryptonite. I want 100 pairs, all the exact same shade, no matter the cost. But. I cannot, for the life of me, find a thick enough pair that doesn’t show every single tiny little imperfection of my legs. Nobody wants to see that I ate an entire wheel of brie this past weekend. That’s not ever cute. So why do designers continue to make these flimsy, see-through versions year in & year out?

The struggle is real.

Thus, today, after scouring the internet, department stores & questioning friends & family alike, I’m posting my absolute favorite white denim finds. One’s with serious structure & texture, to prevent from looking like an awful 80s jazzercise outtake. In hopes that all of my fashion-hungry babes can attain this chic, clean look this Spring without compromising their comfort & security.

Here goes…

Whether you choose a pair mentioned above or find yourself shopping for others that better suit your fancy, just remember that fit, fabric & coverage are the key factors to perfecting white denim. & babes, don’t pair them with bright undies. You’re just setting yourself up for failure.

Happy Hunting. Xx.

Falling

Phew! What a wild July I had. Yikes. However, I’m back & beyond ready to break down one of my FAVORITE seasons for my dazed & confused fashionistas. As much as I love me a great bikini & some major vitamin D, I’m longing for knit sweaters, leather boots & pumpkin spice lattes. Like now.

To prepare for the upcoming season I’ve picked my favorite Fall 2014 pieces that you’ll want to have in full rotation once the Summer temperatures give. Some of these looks are F/W 2015 runway inspired, but most are from my vault of Fall classics because let’s be real, Autumn is at the very least always all about layers, boots & a great jacket.

Let’s go.

wool

Bah Bah Black Sheep: this Fall we’re going to see some of the heaviest wool knits to ever grace the industry. From a thick waffle stitch, to wool socks & [my personal favorite] pullovers, this season is all about comfort. Some people do however find wool too itchy on the skin, with which I’d suggest layering it over a soft lace or nylon fabric or opting out entirely for a heavy cotton or poly-blend. You may find a lack in quality, but your skin will definitely thank you.

Flashbacks: another fun additive to the coming season are the 70s inspired jackets hitting runways & stores. Big, double breasted, flat collared, & multi-fabric designs are just a few of the styles I’ve been seeing & loving. Lest we not forget the ever-famous moto jacket [such as Free People’s amazing selections: here]. These lighter-weight jackets are perfect for this transitional season into Winter & add a sexy//rocker//chic feel to any outfit.

psych dress

Psychedelic: the one curious & really interesting trend I’ve seen are the new competitor to floral prints titled “trippy prints”. These bright, geometric, multicolored fabrics are packing serious punch this Fall, but are not for the faint of heart. The major styling secret behind nailing this trend is “less is more”; pair a wildly printed top with a muted bottom & vice versa. Runway to real way can be tricky, so be selective with this one.

long vest

Invested: one of my absolute favorite styles making headway this Fall are long vests & layering pieces. They are perfect in place of an old blazer & add a great tailored detail to any outfit. I recommend teaming them with a great trouser, over a printed dress or even used as a bulking layer under a winter jacket. This small touch adds sophistication & class to any look.

wide leg

Wider the Better: all trends seem to circulate, often taking only a few seasons to make their way back to you. & this Fall is no different, as wide legged pants & denim are back in full force. My favorite colors being blush, taupe, true blue & black, these effortless pants will have you seriously shaming the skinny jean crowd this season.

a line

Get an A: my last [but absolutely not least] favorite style taking names in the coming season are A-line dresses. These seemingly mod, but multi-bodytype-friendly shapes are absolutely perfect for anyone [what?!]. Truth. The shape is flattering on nearly any body or size & can be paired with tights, boots, or even a sexy heel. My only recommendation: watch your prints. Choosing the right color & pattern is everything to perfecting this wardrobe staple.

As promised in Lyric’s mission statement, I will never lead my [blog] followers &/or clients astray. Fashion is meant for everyone, but style is very much personal. This Fall seems incredibly promising as far as styles & versatility are concerned, but should you have any questions about your own personal style feel free to drop me a line & let’s chat! I’m always willing to write a post on a topic that you’re interested in or answer any fashion questions you may have! You can email me at: Dena@styledbylyric.com or use the comment option below.

Happy Layering, megababes. Xx.

Summer Sun is Setting

Still have a few key Summer items that you have yet to purchase, but can’t convince yourself to spend hundreds on pieces that will only live to see a few more weeks? September 23rd will be here before you know it & your good money should go towards some amazing Autumn layering selections [blog post to come], instead of tank tops that will be shoved in the deep, dark depths of your closet in 9 weeks. However, with 100 degree heat still lingering among us a few wardrobe edits couldn’t hurt, so long as the price is right. Thus, I have decided to share with you one of my favorite budget-shopping secrets: ChicNova. The online site that doesn’t force you to hide your receipt from your husband/boyfriend/mom/etc. & their selections are vibrant, fun & so reasonably priced that you’re guaranteed to find those last minute Summer scores.

So go on. Shop. & don’t feel sorry about it for one single second, because you’re doing it right with this site. && you deserve it.

Xx.

Brunch Wear

Please excuse my absence as of late, I’ve been working like a maniac on the website so I can finally launch & start better assisting my fashionistas one on one. But for now let’s keep rollin like this…

I’ve been approached a handful of times this week about brunch wear. You know, that time between breakfast & lunch when we meet up with our girlfriends or double date & nine times out of ten sit outside on a gorgeous patio & drink bottomless mimosas until we’re completely sunburnt & sideways? No? Not how you do brunch…? Hm, anywho…I love me a good brunch, but I love it even more when I feel beautiful & presentable. Let’s break it down…

layered brunch

1. Come Prepared: I don’t care where you live, the weather can change at any time, so layering is crucial for this event. Chambray is one of my favorite wardrobe pieces because it layers with everything, adds a structured dimension to any outfit & is much lighter than adding a sweater or jacket. I always recommend, when layering, putting together three major items: a tank or tee on bottom, a chambray or light layer between & a heavy jacket [usually leather] on top. This gives you plenty of options & versatility throughout the elements of your day.

floral brunch

2. No Money Shots: dresses are [visually] ideal for a brunch, especially the ones showing up all over stores, given it’s Spring & florals are the ‘it’ pattern. However, chances are your group will be bustling around an oblong table or climbing over one another to get to the restroom, so be wise. If you do opt for a dress, remember to wear a nude biker short underneath or a cute pair of Hanky Panky’s to prevent from flashing your Britney to the entire restaurant. I almost always recommend my clients wear floral print dresses to this event, because they’re age appropriate, effortless & the patterns can be incredibly unique. Just be practical about your event & it’s whereabouts & your outfit will follow suit.

boyfriend brunch

3. Opt Out: if you decide that dresses aren’t for you & you’d rather sport a cute pair of boyfriends jeans or shorts, just be sure to add feminine pieces & colors. Brunches are much like a garden party; think florals, pastels & sunshine, & your outfit should play off of these themes. You don’t have to go super-fem to feel super-sexy; throw on a funky, bright heel & tease your tresses & you will feel as beautiful as ever.

sunnies

4. Burnt Up:  if you are anything like my boyfriend, you leave the house nearly every day without your sunnies & find yourself turning around three miles from home to grab them. Don’t. You will need them more than ever on this day; sitting outside, roasting under the early afternoon sun. Plus, sunglasses are the perfect addition to an outfit. They’re like the tiny, but perfectly red cherry on top of this day & you mustn’t forget them. I’ll be doing a sunnies styling post in the next few weeks, so stay tuned for that! But for the time being, trust yourself & your taste. You know what shape, size & style is right for you, so honor it.

hat problems

5. Hats Off: a hat is always a good idea. Not crucial, but a fun addition. Not to mention, I can’t even count how many times I’ve left a brunch with a burnt scalp due to #hatproblems. I’ve linked a few of my Spring/Summer favorites here, so be sure to check that out & find the perfect head piece for you.

h2o

6. Hydrate: ok so you can’t wear this item [or I guess you could, but it would turn into a weird wet-tee shirt…let’s just not], but it looks good on everyone! Hydrating is such an important part of beauty & fashion, & no one wants to be the downer on this day because they drank too many mimosas or sat too long in the sun without consuming any H2O & get a migraine. Play smart.

& ultimately, have fun. Events with friends & family are times for us to slow down & enjoy the company of one another. We are some of the hardest working creatures to ever exist & we deserve a break sometimes. Trust these guidelines, drink & eat responsibly & love on one another & you’ll have the perfect brunch date. I promise.

Xx.

Rear View

butt

I’ve debated taking on this next topic for fear that it may offend, however, after having witnessed far too many saggy booties the past few days, I’ve decided it’s time…

Let’s talk butts.

Denim is one of the most wearable fabrics & can make any body type incredibly sexy, if worn properly. More often than not I see pockets that are ill-fit for the bodies wearing them & would like to break down the best shaped jeans for the best buns. Here goes:

  • Flat booty babes: be bold; denim with flap pockets & detailing [no rhinestones, ever] will add volume & shape to your rear. Seek jeans with pockets that are placed high on the butt, as this gives a rounder look.
  • Wide booty babes: less is more; medium sized, central-placed pockets make the butt appear smaller & creates an optical illusion by breaking up the expanse of the butt. Be sure to stay away from embellishments & details & always remember: flap pockets are your nemesis.
  • Saggy booty babes: lift & fit; loose fitting denim is not your friend. Tight, fitted denim is ideal for your body type. Avoid long pockets & opt for high-seated ones to help give the illusion of a lift; the bottom of the pockets should never sit lower than the very top of the leg.

Lastly, be sure to respect your waistline & it’s true fit. There are few things more tragic than a perfect pocket & an ill-fitting waist. Muffin top has never & will never be a look; if need-be, always hop a size up & invest in a great belt. Think longevity & future wear, not what will fit for the next day or so if you skip out on your morning coffee & croissant.

Much love & happy hunting. Xx.

the boyfriend

boyfriend

I have seen the distressed boyfriend jean on every street corner this week & have finally decided to help navigate my readers with this potentially difficult look. This stylized concept stemmed from the idea of borrowing a boyfriend’s clothing; Katie Holmes helped launch this look back in 2009. Regardless, this look has skyrocketed since & can be incredibly chic if executed properly.

The three rules to styling boyfriend denim:

1. Too much distress is overkill [the idea is not to look dirty & disheveled, but rather so chic & confident that you can rock menswear & still look sexy]
2. Always add feminine pieces [a slouchy tee & a fitted blazer are perfect additives to this look, but be sure to throw on a heel or some great jewelry to offset the masculinity of the outfit]
3. Fit still matters [focus on the waistline & the length; too oversized just looks lazy & unkempt]

The thing I love most about this look is that it’s incredibly attainable for every body type. Follow along:

Short legs: a tapered, dark, slim jean is ideal for you [making the legs appear longer]
Full legs: a straight, dark wash, with cuffs right at the ankles [showing off the thinnest part of the leg] are your go-to
Thin legs: light or dark, wide-hipped pairs of these jeans are meant for you [giving the illusion of curves in the hips & butt]

This look is so versatile & can be worn day or night. Just be sure to follow the rules above & you will be loving your wardrobe that much more this Spring. Xx.
